My journey with vitiligo began over four years ago. Having many unanswered questions, I wanted to educate myself as much as possible to this skin condition, and understand how it would affect my body and psyche. Through research on the internet, it became clear that there was little information available on autoimmune skin conditions. During this investigative period, I found two differing points of view on vitiligo. On one side, the medical view that this condition appears to occur when immune cells destroy the cells that produce brown pigment (melanocytes). This destruction is thought to be due to an autoimmune problem, but it's exact cause is unknown. Vitiligo may appear at any age. There is an increased rate of the condition in some families. The condition affects about 1 out of every 100 people in the United States.
There is no way to prevent or cure vitiligo. On the other side of this view, Vitiligans and natural practitioner's who believe vitiligo is curable through diet, lifestyle choices, therapies or a combination of the aforementioned. I became convinced that in the middle, exists a place of factuality. Contemplating this, it was obvious that more emphasis should be placed on living with, coping and managing our day to day existence as Vitiligans.
Thus, the foundation of our website, Vitiligans.com was born from thought, and created with friend/business partner and fellow vitiligan, Lucian Voy. We share the common belief, that this autoimmune disorder has a propensity to make Vitiligans feel alone, isolated and at loss. From personal experience, detachment can lead to confusion and embarrassment. One must consider, we as vitiligans, are little known and often discovered once the emotional and psychological pain has manifested itself complete. It occurred to me, I must take control of the changes happening on my skin through personal courage and determination. Making friends and collaborating with other fellow Vitiligans became a priority. There were other Vitiligans like me, but at first you probably felt as I did. As if you are afflicted by this skin condition alone. Statistics show that it affects 0.5 to 1 percent of the total world population. Vitiligans are a large group collectively through the power of social media and other web based platforms like Vitiligans.com. This became my strength, knowing there were others just like myself, whom I could turn to for support and reassurance. Approximately 65 -95 million people are said to be living with vitiligo worldwide. Tapping into and harnessing beautiful spotted beings and those affected, is where we can make the biggest impact on improving the lives of vitiligans, while showcasing collective strengths and talents.
At Vitiligans.com, we are one group of many individuals, coming together for positive change and enlightenment.
