Are we living in a "perfect" world?
Regardless of when we develop vitiligo, be it at a young age or when we are older, we start building a framework for ourselves around this condition. Hoping that sooner or later we shall find an answer, a coping mechanism. The questions still remain. There are no instructions to follow with vitiligo.
Most of us can remember that moment when we first knew we had vitiligo. The questions begin to arise in our minds. Is there a treatment to cure this? Will this get progressively worse? What will I look like in the future? These questions are hard to answer. We desperately search for information. Regardless of our origins, we arrive at the defining moment where we realize that we are powerless.
We live in a world where trends and styles emphasize perfection, where beauty has become a business card and where body and image matter if you want to build a successful career. Social life becomes more diminished, replaced with style and financial growth. Where are we as vitiligans? Are we caught in the middle? Can we overcome this by accepting ourselves? Can we build a better future for ourselves, without the vicious onlookers?
Humanity is a perfect total, as people we are the same, but many of us feel defined under a certain category. As vitiligans, we constantly ask ourselves what is our mission? How can we overcome this? The answer is there, and together we can identify the obstacles and come up with real solutions. We live in a world where we see people attempting to come together, not entirely but on a smaller scale, and when we do, we consider it a tremendous feat. Despite our differences throughout this world, we need not feel separation, vitiligo has the power to unify us. We have different paths to follow in life, but we possess the power to come together as one.
The life of a vitiligan can sometimes be compared with a labyrinth. We encounter twisted and sudden turns. We slide, we fall and then we rise again. We continue to seek our way out. If we have hope, then surely we can find that exit door together, despite our location inside the labyrinth.
